Welcome to the International Summer School on "Low-Carbon Technologies and Intelligent Energy Systems." This program is designed for international students passionate about renewable energy, climate and environmental change, and sustainable development, offering an immersive, interdisciplinary, and forward-looking learning experience.
The program guides participants in systematically building a knowledge framework of low-carbon technologies and energy systems: from foundational clean energy technologies of photovoltaics and energy storage, to key emission reduction strategies such as aviation emission monitoring and control, and further to advanced energy measurement and carbon metrology. Throughout, the program integrates cutting-edge applications of artificial intelligence in energy optimization, intelligent sensing, energy management and decision-making.
The program features an outstanding faculty, jointly led by a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and several recipients of China's National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, bringing together influential international researchers in related fields. Through integrated specialized courses and case studies, participants will cultivate interdisciplinary problem-solving skills to address global energy and environmental challenges.

1. Prof. Yong Yan, Beihang University, China
Yong Yan is the Director and Chief Scientist of International Center for Carbon Neutralization at Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University. He was a Professor of Electronic Instrumentation, Director of Research and Innovation at School of Engineering, University of Kent, UK from 2004 to 2024. He gained the BEng, MEng and PhD degrees from Tsinghua University in China (1980-1988) and Teesside University in the UK (1989-1992), respectively. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2020. He serves as the Vice Chair of International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) Vice President, Editor-in-Chief of the Measurement: Energy journal, Editor of the Measurement journal.
Prof. Yan has been undertaking active research and education for three decades. His research interests include measurement techniques for the Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage chain, multiphase flow metering, combustion process monitoring, and intelligent sensing and condition monitoring. He is a recipient of more than 20 prizes and awards in recognition of his research achievements, including the Best Applications Award of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society in 2017. He has published more than 550 papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, and his h-index is 56 with over 12,000 citations.
2. Prof. Adrian Podoleanu, University of Kent, United Kingdom
Adrian Podoleanu (Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, of the Institute of Physics, of Optica, of SPIE, International Fellow of Chinese Optical Society) is the Head of the Applied Optics Group, Professor of Biomedical Optics in the Department of Engineering, Mathematics and Physics, University of Kent, Canterbury, UK, an investigator of the Biomedical Research Centre, University College London (UCL) and Institute of Ophthalmology and honorary professor in the UCL and in the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Timisoara. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electronics from the Electronics and Telecommunications Faculty, Technical University of Bucharest in 1984. He was a founder member of the Romanian Chapter of SPIE and its first Chairman (1992). He has obtained the first OCT images from the retina in the human eye and reported the first combined OCT/SLO instrument. Currently he serves as the Associate Secretary of the International Commission for Optics. 3. Prof. Lijun Xu, Beihang University, China
Lijun Xu received the B.Sc., M.Eng., and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and instrumentation from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 1990, 1993, and 1996, respectively. From 1997 to 2001, he was an Associate Professor at Tianjin University. From 2002 to 2006, he was a Research Fellow at the University of Greenwich, London, U.K., University of Kent, Kent, U.K., and a Higher Scientific Officer at the Institute of Cancer Research, London, U.K. He is currently a Professor of the School of Instrumentation and Opto-Electronic Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing, China. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications. His current research interests include tomographic imaging, scanning imaging, and dynamic process monitoring. Dr. Xu is a Distinguished Young Scholar awarded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). He received a First-Class Invention Award from the Ministry of Education Technology and a First-Class Award from the Chinese Instrument Society Science and Technology in 2012, and 2014, respectively. He was elected as a Chang-Jiang Scholar Program Professor and a National High-Level Personnel of Special Support Program by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Organization, China, in 2014 and 2016, respectively.
4. Prof. Haigang Wang, Beihang University, China
Haigang Wang is a principal research scientist in Beihang University. His research interests include flow dynamics simulation and measurement of multi-phase flows, mathematical modeling and process control for fluidized bed drying, process tomography and 3D image reconstruction, monitoring and control for granulation, drying and coating processes in the pharmaceutical industry. Dr. Wang has participated in several key projects as PI funding by EPSRC, TSB in UK and NSFC projects in China related with energy and pharmaceutical industry. He has published more than 200 scientific papers including the best paper award in international process tomography conference in 2008 in Poland and one international patent which has been demonstrated in GEA-Aeromatic in Switzerland and UK, AstraZeneca in Sweden and DuPont in USA. He has given several keynote lectures in international conference including 2018 World Congress on Particle Technology Congress in USA, 2019 International Fluidization XVI conference in China and CFB14 2024 in Taiyuan. He is further a member of AIChE and IEEE and reviewers for several international journals, including AIChE Journal, Chemical Engineering and Science, Measurement Science and Technology, Flow Measurement and Instrumentation, Fuel & Energy and Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision.
5. Prof. Jung-Sik Kim, Beihang University, China
Jung-Sik Kim is an internationally renowned scientist and academic leader with over 25 years of expertise in micro/nano-fabrication, MEMS-based sensor design, and the thermal management of electrochemical energy systems. Before joining Beihang University in 2021, he held a distinguished 12-year tenure as a Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University (UK) and served as a Research Associate and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London (UK). He was awarded Ph.D degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham (2006).
Prof. Kim is the pioneer of THERMONO©, a patented multi-junction thermal array technology for in-situ micro-thermal sensing in harsh environments, and the inventor of the SOFC-based amperometric hydrogen purity sensor (HySensor). His research bridges fundamental materials science with scalable industrial applications, evidenced by the founding of a spin-out company in the UK and collaborations with global industry leaders such as Rolls-Royce Ltd., and Hyundai Motors Ltd. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications focusing on the thermo-mechanical behaviour of energy materials and smart sensor integration. He has also helped to develop two spin-off companies, including Beijing HySensor Ltd., officially registered in January 2024.
6. Prof. Haiwen Ge, Beihang University, China
Haiwen Ge is a Professor at the International Research Center for Carbon Neutralization, Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University. He got Bachelor and Master degrees from University of Science and Technology of China, and Doctor of Science from Heidelberg University. He was a postdoc fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He worked at Ford, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, John Deere, Texas Tech University, and Zhejiang Laboratory. His research focuses on modeling, simulation and optimization methods for thermal fluid problems, especially reactive flow, two-phase flow, and engine combustion. Five engines he worked on won the Wards 10 Best Engines Award. He has published 2 monographs, 5 book chapter, 94 archived papers, and 7 patents. He was the chair of SAE General Powertrain Development Committee, and one of the Executive Associates of ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division. Currently, he is a member of Thermal Science Technical Committee of the American Society of Thermal Fluid Engineers, a member of Editorial board of the journal Computational Thermal Sciences, a member of National Standardization Technical Committee on Combustion, Energy Conservation, and Emission. He received the Most Influential Faculty Member of Texas Tech University, and Forest R. McFarland Award from Society of Automobile Engineers.
7. Prof. Jing Rao, Beihang University, China
Jing Rao is a professor at Beihang University. She previously served as a Lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia, and held an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. She received her Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Her research focuses on ultrasonic non-destructive testing and structural health monitoring. She has led over 30 research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Beijing Natural Science Foundation, the German Humboldt Foundation, and UNSW Australia, among others. Currently, she serves as an Associate Editor for Measurement, Ultrasonic Imaging and the IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing.
8. Prof. Jing Zhong, Beihang University, China
Jing Zhong is a professor at Beihang University. He received the B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 2009 and 2014, respectively. From 2014 to 2015, he worked as postdoc fellow in Nagoya University, Japan, supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). From 2015 to 2018, he worked as a Humboldt postdoc fellow in TU Braunschweig, Germany, supported by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. From 2018 to 2021, he worked as a project PI, supported by German Research Foundation. His current research interests include magnetic nanoparticle dynamics, magnetic bio-sensing, magnetic particle imaging physics, instrumentation, and its biomedical applications.
9. Prof. Rui Sang, Beihang University, China
Rui Sang completed his undergraduate studies at East China University of Science and Technology (2008-2012) before joining the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a research assistant (2012-2014). He then pursued his master’s degree at the University of Rennes, France (2014-2016), and obtained his Ph.D. from the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis in Germany (2016-2019). He continued at the same institute as a postdoctoral and associate researcher (2019-2025). Since October 2025, he has been a tenure-track professor at the Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University, China. His research focuses on the design and development of sustainable petrochemical processes, including olefin carbonylation, new energy materials, and carbon dioxide utilization. As first author (including co-first author) or corresponding author, he has published 15 papers in top journals such as Nature Catalysis, Nature Energy, Nature Communications, Journal of the American Chemical Society, and Angewandte Chemie International Edition etc. He has also been granted 13 international invention patents. Outside of research, he enjoys traveling, swimming, running, reading, and listening to music.
10. Prof. Ruijie Ma, Beihang University, China
Ruijie Ma is a Full Professor at Carbon Neutrality Center, Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University in China, specializing in organic semiconductor materials and their optoelectronic applications. His research focuses on two complementary frontiers: green photovoltaic devices for sustainable energy conversion, and intelligent detectors for advanced sensing technologies. By designing and engineering novel organic materials, Prof. Ma explores how their unique light-matter interactions can be harnessed to create flexible, low-carbon energy solutions and smart detection systems with enhanced functionality. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical device engineering, contributing to the development of next-generation technologies for a sustainable future.
11. Dr. Jianguo Ma, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Jianguo Ma is an associate professor and PhD adviser at Beihang University. He received his PhD from NC State University and completed postdoctoral research at UCLA. As a Young Yangtze River Scholar, his research focuses on medical ultrasound theranostic technology. He leads national key research projects and published over 60 SCI papers.
12. Dr. Jiangtao Sun, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Jiangtao Sun, IEEE Senior Member, received the B.Eng. and M.Eng degree in instrumentation and measurement from Xidian University, China, in 2008 and 2010, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and electronic engineering from The University of Manchester, Manchester, U.K., in 2014. In September 2014, he joined the Brunel Innovation Centre (The Weld Institute & Brunel University London) as a research fellow and worked there for two years. Thereafter from October 2016 to April 2017, he was an associate professor in Biomedical Engineering with Sun Yat-Sen University, China. He is now an associate professor and nominated as Blue Sky Young Scholar in Instrumentation and Measurement with Beihang University, China. His current research interests include electrical capacitance/resistance tomography for industrial and biomedical applications, multi-sensor data fusion, and flow measurement and instrumentation.
13. Dr. Shijie Sun, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Shijie Sun received the B.Sc. degree in automation from Tianjin University, Tianjin, China, in 2011, and the Ph.D. degree in measurement technology and instruments from Beihang University, Beijing, China, in 2017. He is currently an Associate Professor with Beihang University. His current research interests include magnetic particle imaging and electrical tomography.
14. Dr. Guangze Li, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Guangze Li, Associate Professor. He received his joint Ph.D. degree from Beihang University and the National University of Singapore and is recognized as a Young Talent of the Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology. His research focuses on the detection and control of aviation emission pollutants, heat and mass transfer of micro/nano multiphase flow. He has published over 20 papers in prestigious international SCI journals in energy and environment, including one ESI highly cited paper. He has co-authored two academic monographs and holds over 10 authorized or pending national invention patents and one international PCT patent. Dr. Li has led more than 10 research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program and Young Scientists Fund) and provincial natural science foundation projects, and has participated in the National Key R&D Program and fundamental research initiatives. He has contributed to the approval of two national standards and one society standard. He has received several honors, such as the First Prize of Technological Invention from the Ministry of Education and the First Prize of Technological Invention from the Chinese Society of Particuology.
15. Dr. Shuo Gao, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Shuo Gao, a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, Xiaomi Young Scholar, IEEE Senior Member, and Stanford Top 2% Scientist globally, specializes in medical-engineering integration and bioinspired intelligence. His research has yielded over 170 achievements, including 80+ papers as first/corresponding author in top journals and conferences such as Nature Reviews Bioengineering, Nature Sensors, and Nature Communications(7 in Naturefamily journals), 30+ authorized patents in China, the U.S., and the U.K., and 1 English monograph, 2 textbooks, and 3 book chapters published by Springer-Nature Press. He has led projects including NSFC General and Youth Programs, and National Key R&D Programs. Among his honors are the First Prize for Scientific Progress (first rank) from a national-level association, Beijing Teaching Excellence Award, and special recognition as a "Most Beautiful Science Worker." He serves as an advisory expert for national health research institutes, a distinguished expert at Tsinghua Chang Gung Hospital and Beijing Tongren Hospital, and holds editorial or reviewer roles for Science, Science Robotics, Nature Electronics, and IEEE/Springer-Nature journals.
16. Dr. Meiyin Zhu, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Meiyin Zhu is an Associate Professor at Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University and a researcher at the International Research Center for Carbon Neutrality. His research focuses on the environmental and climate impacts of aviation, including aircraft emissions throughout the flight cycle, contrail formation and evolution, and climate-optimal aviation operations.
He also works on intelligent sensing and fault diagnosis for aero-engines, as well as modeling and control of high-altitude test facilities. Dr. Zhu has published more than 60 academic papers and holds multiple invention patents in aerospace and energy technologies. His work has been supported by major national research programs and recognized with several scientific awards.
In this summer school, he will introduce methods for analyzing aviation emissions across the full flight cycle and their implications for environment and climate.
17. Dr. Zhen Xu, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Zheng Xu, Associate Professor, his primary research directions include aviation new energy and environmental impact, as well as sustainable aviation fuel emission assessment. He has long been engaged in key technology research and prototype development for aviation power. He has presided over projects including the General Program and Young Scientists Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and a special project on airworthiness of Aero Engine Corporation of China. In the past five years, he has published more than 20 high-level SCI papers as the first/corresponding author, including 4 ESI Highly Cited Papers (2 of which were selected as Hot Papers). He independently developed a turbofan aero-engine applicable to 100% SAF.
18. Dr. Tengyu Liu, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Tengyu Liu is associate Professor at Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University. He obtained his Ph.D in Aerospace Propulsion Theory and Engineering from Beihang University in 2023 and was awarded as the outstanding doctoral dissertation of Beihang University. Before he joined the Hangzhou International Innovation Institute, he worked as Postdoctoral fellow at Tsinghua University. His research focuses on low-altitude propulsion and power systems, combustion instability mechanisms in aerospace engines, and advanced optical and acoustic diagnostical methods applied in aerospace power systems. He is the principal investigator of the Youth project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the project funded by China Postdoctoral Science Foundation. He has published over 10 academic papers in international peer-reviewed journals. He serves as the reviewer for several international journals. He is the member of AIAA, Combustion Institute, and Chinese Society of Astronautics.
19. Dr. Kang Pan, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Kang Pan is an Associate Professor in Hangzhou International Innovation Institute, Beihang University. He received his Master and PhD degree from University of Waterloo and University of Toronto, and he also worked in Cambridge CARES Singapore, University of Cambridge and University of Toronto as Postdoc Researcher before joining Beihang University. His research interest is focused on low/zero carbon fuel, clean combustion, emission control, advanced IC engines, emission and environment.
20. Dr. Zhen Wang, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Zhen Wang obtained his PhD from Tsinghua University in 2019, and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. He joined Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University in 2025. He was awarded the Hong Kong ITF Postdoctoral Fellowship and now leads a project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Dr. Wang's main research work is dedicated to using ultrafast spectroscopy technology, synchrotron radiation technology, molecular computational simulations, and other methods to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanism and structure-property relationship of organic solar cells, and to guide the fabrication of efficient and stable devices. The relevant results were published in journals such as Nat. Commun., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem., Adv. Mater., etc., which have been cited more than 2600 times.
21. Dr. Yandan Jiang, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Yandan Jiang is an Associate Professor at the Hangzhou International Innovation Institute of Beihang University, China, since October 2025. She received the Ph.D. degree in control science and engineering from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, in 2019. Before joining Beihang University, she was an Associate Research Fellow in College of Control Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, China from March 2020 to June 2023, where she became a Research Fellow from July 2023 to September 2025. Dr. Jiang has published over 40 papers in top journals such as IEEE TIE, IEEE TMI, IEEE TIM, and Measurement, along with more than 30 conference papers and 7 granted Chinese invention patents. Currently, she is a senior member of IEEE and a senior member of the China Instrument and Control Society. She serves as a committee member of the Youth Committee of the China Instrument and Control Society (CIS), an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, and an Associate Editor of Measurement. Her research interests include measurement and instrumentation, multiphase flow measurement, process tomography and biomedical imaging.
22. Dr. Zhu Fang, Beihang University, China, Associate Professor
Zhu Fang is an Associate Professor in Energy and Power Engineering at International Research Center for Carbon Neutralization, Hangzhou International Innovation Institute, Beihang University. He received his B.Eng. degree from Chongqing University (2013-2017) and Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University (2017-2022). Subsequently, he conducted postdoctoral research at Tsinghua University from 2022 to 2025. His research focuses on the dynamics of small adhesive particles, multiphase flow modeling and simulation under multi-physical fields, and flame synthesis of functional nanoparticle materials. He has authored over 20 peer-reviewed papers in SCI-indexed journals, including the Journal of Computational Physics, Physical Review E, and Applied Physics Letters. He holds more than five granted patents and has received over 10 awards for outstanding papers and posters.
23. Dr. Bowen Sun, Beihang University, China, Postdoctoral Fellow
Bowen Sun, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Large-scale Scientific Instrument Research Institute, School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering, Beihang University. He received his Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Davis, and his Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Duke University. His research focuses on magnetic noise suppression methods for quantum precision magnetic field measurement and the development of low-noise magnetic shielding materials. He has participated in the National Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure Project, the National Key Research and Development Program, and the Ministry of Science and Technology's "Science and Technology Innovation 2030" initiative. His research findings have been published in journals such as Nature Communications and Advanced Materials Today. He has been awarded the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation General Program and was selected for the Young Talent Support Program by Chinese Institute of Electronics.
