Title: Migration from 5G-A to 6G: motivation, key technologies and standardization

Abstract:
As the telecommunications industry continue evolute to the next phase of connectivity, 6G, formalized by 3GPP starting with Release 20, acts as an important generation of wireless network. This talk gives the primary motivations driving 6G, specifically the need to satisfy demanding industrial requirements and the explosive growth of uplink data requirement. It provides the major key technologies defining evolution, including: new spectrum, MIMO evolution, integrate sensing and communication, AI/ML integration for wireless network, etc. Furthermore, the standardization roadmap of 6G is introduced, highlighting the milestones and the ongoing work in Release 20. By analyzing the synergy between technological breakthroughs and global standards, it illustrates how 6G transforms the network from a communication pipe into a highly perceptive, automated platform, setting the stage for the future telecommunication era.

Short Bio:
Lei Lu is the Director of Advanced Wireless technology Lab, Huawei Munich Research center. After received his Master degree from Tongji University in 2007, he joined Huawei and has 19-year-long wireless technologies research and development experience. He has been the project leader on Huawei 5G air interface PoC and field trial focusing mainly on key technologies PoC verification such as user centric no cell, non-orthogonal multiple access schemes, new waveform and grant-free transmission procedures, as well as field trial test to verify the performance of new air interface performance. He continues to work in 6G research and standardization. He is the contributor to 3GPP and had pioneered fundamental technologies from 4G to 6G wireless with more than 100 awarded patents. His research interests include integrate sensing and communication, wireless AI model, and Agentic AI for network.
